POSITION SUMMARY

Radiology Alliance is seeking a Radiology Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner to support our practice in the greater Nashville, TN region. This provider will work under the supervision of a Radiologist with appropriate privileges. Job knowledge, skills, and abilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Write orders for medications, treatments, tests, and IV fluids consistent with scope of practice of the PA/NP and the supervising radiologist.
  • Review the patient’s medical record to verify the appropriateness of a specific exam or procedure and report significant findings to radiologist.
  • Interview patient to obtain, verify or update medical history.
  • Confirm patient ID and procedure site and side.
  • Explain procedure to patient or significant others, including a description of risks, benefits, alternatives, and follow up. Patient must be able to communicate with the radiologist if he/she requests or if any questions arise that cannot be appropriately answered by the Radiology PA/NP.       
  • Obtained informed consent. Patient must be able to communicate with the radiologist if he/she requests or if any questions arise that cannot be appropriately answered by the Radiology PA/NP.
  • Determine if patient has followed instructions in preparation for the exam (e.g. diet, pre-medications).
  • Assess risk factors that may contraindicate the procedure (e.g. health history, medications, pregnancy, psychological indicators, and alternative medicines). If procedure is contraindicated by risk factors, case must be reviewed by a radiologist.
  • Obtain and evaluate vital signs.
  • Perform physical examination and analysis of data (e.g. signs and symptoms, laboratory values, and significant abnormalities) and report abnormal findings to the supervising radiologist.
  • Apply ECG leads.
  • Perform urinary catheterization. If the patient is known to have an anatomic anomaly, recent surgery in the area, etc., direct supervision would be needed.
  • Perform venipuncture.
  • Monitor IV therapy for flow rate and complications in compliance with facility and regulatory rules.
  • Position patient to perform required procedure, using immobilization devices and modifying technique as necessary. Application of restraints should be in compliance with departmental rules and regulations.
  • Observe and assess patient who has received moderate conscious sedation in compliance with facility and regulatory rules.
  • Assess patient’s vital signs and level of anxiety / pain and inform radiologist when appropriate.
  • Recognize and respond to medical emergencies (e.g. drug reactions, cardiac arrest, and hypoglycemia) and activate emergency response systems, including notification of a radiologist.
  • Administer oxygen as prescribed.
  • Operate a fixed / mobile fluoroscopic unit.
  • Assure documentation of fluoroscopy time.
  • Explain effects and potential side effects to the patient of the pharmaceutical required for examination.
  • Administer contrast agents and radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed by the radiologist.
  • Administer general medications as prescribed by the radiologist.
  • Monitor patient for side effects or complication of pharmaceuticals.
  • Perform fluoroscopic examinations and procedures including contrast media administration and operation of a fluoroscopic unit.
  • Perform procedures including contrast media administration and needle or catheter placement under supervision of radiologist.
  • Perform additional procedures that the radiologist deems appropriate including, but not limited to, suturing.
  • Perform routine CT post-processing (e.g. 3D reconstruction, modifications to FOV, slice spacing, algorithm).
  • Perform specialized CT post-processing (e.g. cardiac scoring, shunt graft measurements).
  • Perform MR post processing data analysis: (e.g. 3D reconstructions, MIP, 3D surface rendering, volume rendering).
  • Evaluate images for completeness and diagnostic quality, and recommend additional images as required (general radiography, CT and MRI; Note: Additional images only in the same modality such as additional CT cuts).
  • Evaluate images for diagnostic utility and report clinical observations to the radiologist. (Note: Applies to general radiography, CT and MRI).
  • Review imaging procedures, make initial observations, and communicate observations only to the radiologist.
  • Record previously communicated initial observations of imaging procedures according to approved protocols.
  • Communicate radiologist’s report to referring physician consistent with ACR Communication Guideline.
  • Provide radiologist-prescribed post care instructions to patients.
  • Perform follow-up patient evaluation and communicate findings to the radiologist.
  • Document procedure in appropriate record and document exceptions from established protocol or procedure.
  • Write patient discharge summary for review and co-signature by radiologist.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities with radiology practice (e.g. quality of care, patient flow, reject-repeat analysis, patient satisfaction).
  • Assist with data collection and review for clinical trials or other research.
  • Maintain values congruent with the Code of Ethics, as well as adhering to national, institutional and/or departmental standards, policies, and procedures regarding the standard of care for patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to the Corporate Compliance Plan and HIPAA Compliance Plan.

DESIRED PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a graduate of a PA/NP program that qualifies the graduate to sit for the board certification examination
  • BLS AND ACLS certification required
  • Must hold a DEA certificate
  • Licensed or have the ability to be licensed as a PA/NP in the state of TN and KY
